Pyriproxyfen as a Mosquito Larvicide
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator that affects the physiology of morphogenesis, reproduction and embryogenesis of insects. It exhibits a high level of activity against mosquito larvae inhibiting adult emergence at very low dose rates. It has low mammalian toxicity and environmental impact. This paper reviews pyriproxyfen efficacy against nuisance mosquitoes and vectors of dengue and malaria. Pyriproxyfen is useful in resistance prevention or management strategies where chemical adulticides are being used since field resistance is unknown. Pyriproxyfen can be transferred by adults to oviposition sites causing effects on egg eclosion and inhibition of emergence.

Potential for resistance to pyriproxyfen: a promising new mosquito larvicide.
An organophosphorus-resistant strain of Culex quinquefasciatus was pressured with pyriproxyfen for 17 generations. Egg viability began declining in the F7 generation and became lower as the selection process continued; by the F17 generation egg viability was too low to proceed further. Susceptibility tests on larvae of the F5, F10, F15, and F17 generations showed no indication of increased tole...
متن کاملThe larvicide pyriproxyfen blamed during the Zika virus outbreak does not cause microcephaly in zebrafish embryos
Although the zika virus (ZIKV) has now been strongly correlated with emerging cases of microcephaly in the Americas, suspicions have been raised regarding the use of pyriproxyfen, a larvicide that prevents mosquito development, in drinking water. The effects of this compound on neurodevelopment have not yet been addressed specifically in vertebrates. As a result, we aimed at addressing the effe...
متن کاملMosquito-Disseminated Pyriproxyfen Yields High Breeding-Site Coverage and Boosts Juvenile Mosquito Mortality at the Neighborhood Scale
BACKGROUND Mosquito-borne pathogens pose major public health challenges worldwide. With vaccines or effective drugs still unavailable for most such pathogens, disease prevention heavily relies on vector control. To date, however, mosquito control has proven difficult, with low breeding-site coverage during control campaigns identified as a major drawback. A novel tactic exploits the egg-laying ...
متن کاملMale Mosquitoes as Vehicles for Insecticide
BACKGROUND The auto-dissemination approach has been shown effective at treating cryptic refugia that remain unaffected by existing mosquito control methods. This approach relies on adult mosquito behavior to spread larvicide to breeding sites at levels that are lethal to immature mosquitoes. Prior studies demonstrate that 'dissemination stations,' deployed in mosquito-infested areas, can contam...
متن کاملMosquito-Disseminated Insecticide for Citywide Vector Control and Its Potential to Block Arbovirus Epidemics: Entomological Observations and Modeling Results from Amazonian Brazil
BACKGROUND Mosquito-borne viruses threaten public health worldwide. When the ratio of competent vectors to susceptible humans is low enough, the virus's basic reproductive number (R0) falls below 1.0 (each case generating, on average, <1.0 additional case) and the infection fades out from the population. Conventional mosquito control tactics, however, seldom yield R0 < 1.0. A promising alternat...
